Grogs & Sand
"Ground fired body added to clays to provide a proportion of already fired and often refractory material. Grog provides texture, both tactile and visual, along with bite for better control in forming. Grog is an opener which helps the clay to dry uniformly and because it is already fired it proportionately cuts down the overall shrinkage and hence any tendency to crack or warp. It is usual to consider grog as a body that is more refractory than the clay to which it is added and most grogs are fireclay fired to at least 1300°C (2372°F)."
