The works in Yakimono: 4000 Years of Japanese Ceramics range from the
oldest earthenware in the world, from the Jomon period (10,500-C. 300 BCE), to
works by contemporary ceramists. The exhibition is organized by historical period
and geographical area. The majority of the objects are from the Kamakura, Momoyama,
Edo, Taisho, and Showa periods. Notable works include simple Kamakura pieces,
free-style Oribe tea ceramics of the Momoyama period and Kakiemon from Arita,
and, from the Edo period, colorful Kutani porcelain and works by Nonomura Ninsei.
Inclusion of the more modern Taisho and Showa pieces offers a view of the development
of ceramics through the ages. |
