Decoration is part of the whole process of making pottery and cannot be achieved in isolation. Accepting this and presupposing that readers have a basic knowledge of clay forming techniques and materials, John Colbeck describes the range of processes of pottery decoration which require no machinery.

Separate sections describe over two dozen processes. With slight variation of emphasis appropriate to the different topics, each section combines a short outline of the particular process with a series of demonstration photographs with their accompanying text, followed by photographs of selected examples. The emphasis throughout is a practical one: the outline and series of photographs aim to communicate common principles and practices of the processes, and the examples, including many historical pieces, are chosen not simply for their quality but to extend aspects of processes shown in the demonstration sequences.

Appendices giving sound practice in the use of materials, a list of books for further reading, a glossary and a list of supplier's addresses, together with a comprehensive index, combine with the main sections to produce an invaluable handbook for everyone interested in pottery.
