"Art is not about exclusive experiences. Art is not about something the artist
knows; it is about something we all know. It recapitulates life. We all share
a creative goal with art."
Brother Thomas' belief in the transcendental, unifying power of art has informed
his work in pottery over the last 40 years. He began the process of engagement
with art as a young man in Nova Scotia, and has continued it during his years
at the Benedictine Monastery at Weston Priory and his current tenure as artist-in-residence
at Mount Saint Benedict in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Thomas' work has been exhibited at the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum,
Springfield, Massachusetts; the Bennington Museum, Bennington, Vermont; The Art
Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, Nova Scotia; the Erie Art Museum, Erie, Pennsylvania
and others. Commencing in March 1993, he will be having a traveling exhibition
across the United States including New York, Ohio, Minnesota and Massachusetts.
Since 1982 his work has been shown at the Pucker Gallery both in major exhibitions
and on a continuing basis.
His works are included in Museums in the United States and abroad including the
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts; the George Walter Vincent Smith Art
Museum, Springfield, Massachusetts; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City,
New York; the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.; the Newark Museum, Newark,
New Jersey; the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Canada; the Fogg Museum of Harvard
University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Chicago Art Institute, Chicago, Illinois;
Windsor Castle, England; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; and in private
collections in the United States, Canada, Germany, England and Japan.
This book contains an introductory essay on Brother Thomas' art and philosophy,
an essay by the artist, and an extensive glossary of items (compiled by Brother
Thomas). Over one hundred full color photographs illustrate the range and variety
of Brother Thomas' work of the past decade, as well as many works in public collections. |
