Throwing is the action of forming an amorphous mass of clay into a shape with
circular symmetry, using a revolving flat turntable or potter's wheel. Learning
to throw is like learning to play a musical instrument; basic principles must
be absorbed and techniques must be practiced many times before tangible progress
is achieved. In this book, Richard Phethean examines in depth the materials, equipment,
and techniques needed for successful throwing. An introduction section packed
with advice on different materials and their preparation is followed by chapters
examining every aspect of throwing, including turning (working with leather-hard
clay as opposed to wet clay) and ornamental detailing. Concentrating initially
on the importance of body position and control, the author stresses the need to
develop an individual working style. After a detailed examination of basic techniques,
he looks at their application to a range of vessels, from jugs, bowls, and curved-based
pots to more complicated lidded forms. Techniques are fully illustrated with the
aid of sequence illustration, and common problems are diagnosed with advice on
how to effect repairs during the throwing process. A final section on character
and design completes the book, which will be a valuable source of reference for
amateur potters and students of ceramics. |
