Ceramic Coatings Ceramic Coatings have two purposes. The coatings have the property of radiating heat more efficiently than the surface onto which they are sprayed. This results in improved heating efficiency and often a substantial saving in fuel cost. It is flexible, easy to cut and shape and easy to install. Superwool 607 MAX Blanket has an excellent thermal stability and retains its original soft fibrous structure up to classification temperature. It has a maximum service temperature of 2,372° F and a continuous use limit of 2,300° F. We stock this in 1” thick and 2” thick blankets. It comes in rolls that are 24” wide. Mix this dry compound with water to a creamy consistency and apply with a brush to the top side of kiln shelves. Sometimes kiln wash is used in the decorative process of pots and handbuilt pieces. Kiln Patch This is the best kiln patching compound we have found. Bricks are stronger where they are patched together rather than where they are still whole. Use the patch to glue firebrick back together. A quick dip (or spray) of the soft brick in water helps to allow Lee's Patch to flow and coat better. Kiln Wash Lee’s Kiln Wash contains space age materials, which act to bind the kiln wash to the shelf better. It minimizes or eliminates the problem of kiln wash flaking off of the shelf. Ceramic engineers have told us to coat silicon carbide and other kiln shelves on both sides and the edges. This will help prevent the shelves from re-oxidizing and going through the stresses that eventually cause warpage, cracking, and fatigue. Oxyprobes Every experienced reduction potter has experienced opening their kiln at one time to find gorgeous glazes and another time to find glazes that appear flat or lifeless.
