The 500 handmade clay tiles in this juried collection are a canvas for decorative
embellishment for artists from around the world. Several of the pieces are outstanding
for their surface treatments, such as atmospheric firings, rather than for their
form. Others illustrate how clay offers a richer and more durable surface to draw
and paint on than either paper or canvas. The translucency and color intensity
of glazes for example, and the ability to sgraffito through wetware slip
add depth that can never be attained with conventional drawing methods. Some of
the entries could be considered sculptures while others present an artist's narrative
from political commentary to whimsy and humor. Whether individual gems, like Michael
Cohen's "Tree," or cladding for an entire side of building, such as
Skuja Braden's "Flowers," each tile has been principally designed for
visual appreciation.
"Mr. Punch and His Dog Toby" presents an intriguing narrative, as do
all of Melody Ellis's low-relief pieces. "Green Tiles," by Carrie Anne
Parks, recalls outdoor tile's early-twentieth-century heyday.
A great majority of the entries utilize relief in some form, such as Nielsen Amon's
and Ruby Levesque's "Alhambra," which is so richly textured that it
begs to be touched. New technology is also represented. Brian J. Boldon's "View
From a Distance, Corner Mural" features photo-quality images, printed in
sublimation ink dyes. And no collection of tiles would be complete without some
mosaic work. "Margaret River Education Campus Waterfall," Ian Dowling's
slip cast, iron and copper-oxide structure, is but one of the extraordinary mosaics
presented.
Juried by Angelica Pozo, a leading presence in the field, this study survey will
serve as inspiration for beginning and professional tile makers, as well as collectors
and anyone who appreciates fine craftsmanship. |
