This outstanding survey showcases the remarkable design and craftsmanship of contemporary
ceramic artists who have interpreted the form of two everyday objects: the plate
and the charger.
"Artists' plates seek to speak through our connection to home, using the
common act of eating together to invoke a farther-reaching philosophy or message,"
explains Linda Arbuckle, who has chosen the five hundred spectacular pieces included
in these pages. Some of the work is strictly utilitarian, others are dramatically
decorated, and still others act as a creative canvas or even as sculpture.
Becky and Steve Lloyd featured sgraffito decorations on their porcelain "Platter
with Leaf Pattern," while Claudia Reese enhanced her slab-built, earthenware
"Odd Disks" with an inverse inlay and a clear glaze. Gas fired at cone
10, Maishe Dickman's wheel-thrown and altered stoneware platted includes raised
elements in an abstract design. And "Nicky's Nose Cove Caplien Platter,"
by David Hayashida and Linda Yates, was hand built from stoneware, slab pressed
into a bisque mold, salt and soda fired, and then crash cooled.
This stunning survey presents a unique and wide-ranging look at contemporary ceramic
arts. |
